How to Grow with ShroomTek

ShroomTek is an all-in-one mushroom grow bag: sterilized grain and manure-based substrate sealed in one bag with a self-healing injection port and a 5-micron filter patch. You inject a spore or liquid culture syringe, let the mycelium colonize inside the bag, then open the bag for fruiting — no pressure cooker, no mixing your own substrate, and no separate fruiting chamber required.

We stock ShroomTek as an authorized North Spore dealer from our licensed mushroom farm in Mayo, Florida. This page is our on-site walkthrough of the inject → colonize → rubber-band → cut → fruit → harvest method so you can stay on 4kbowen.com from product page to harvest. Why growers like the ShroomTek bag

  • One bag, full cycle. Grain and bulk substrate are already combined and optimally hydrated. Inoculation, colonization, and fruiting can stay in the same bag.
  • Built for clean inoculation. Self-healing injection port for a spore or culture syringe; 5-micron filter patch for gas exchange while blocking many airborne contaminants.
  • Sterile out of the box. Bags are sterilized in a commercial-grade steam autoclave, with sterility checks. Condensation around the injection port is normal and does not mean the bag failed.
  • Beginner-friendly for dung-loving species. Best results come from manure-loving mushrooms matched to a manure-based all-in-one blend (proprietary mix of organic manure-based compost, organic grain, coco coir, and quality supplements — exact recipe stays with the maker).
  • Spore Boostr included. Each bag ships with Spore Boostr (5 ml) so spore syringes can germinate into liquid culture before you inoculate, which shortens the wait versus injecting raw spores alone.

Many growers see a first flush in about 30–60 days after inoculation, depending on species, strain, inoculum rate, and room conditions.

What you need

  • Your ShroomTek bag (and the included Spore Boostr vial)
  • Spore syringe or liquid culture syringe for a dung-loving species
  • Nitrile or latex gloves
  • 70% isopropyl alcohol (spray bottle) and clean paper towels or alcohol wipes
  • Scissors or a clean utility knife
  • One rubber band (standard size that fits snug around the colonized block)
  • Spray bottle of cooled boiled or distilled water (for fruiting humidity)

Helpful but optional: still air box or clean low-draft corner, flame source to re-sterilize a reused needle tip, kitchen timer for misting. A monotub or martha tent is optional if you want more control later — the bag is designed to fruit on its own.

1. Sanitize your workspace

  1. Pick a low-draft spot. Close windows, pause fans and HVAC if you can, and clear a wipeable surface.
  2. Wipe the surface and the outside of the ShroomTek bag with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Let alcohol sit a few seconds, then wipe dry with a clean towel.
  3. Put on gloves and wipe your gloved hands with alcohol.
  4. Sanitize scissors/knife and the rubber band the same way before you need them at fruiting time.

A still air box or flow hood is nice if you have one. Most home growers succeed on a cleaned counter if they keep air still and work quickly.

2. Spore syringe vs liquid culture (and Spore Boostr)

ShroomTek works with both spore syringes and liquid culture syringes.

  • Liquid culture already contains live mycelium. Growth usually shows sooner.
  • Spore syringe contains spores that must germinate first. Without a booster step, expect roughly 1–3 extra weeks before you see mycelium compared with liquid culture.

Use Spore Boostr with spores (recommended): Inject your spores into the included Spore Boostr broth and let them germinate. After about 1–2 weeks, when you see visible mycelium in the vial, inoculate the ShroomTek bag with that culture. That turns a slow spore start into a faster liquid-culture-style inoculation.

⚠️ If you inject a spore syringe straight into the bag without Spore Boostr: Do not shake the bag right after inoculation. Shaking can keep spores from germinating. Leave the bag still until mycelium is clearly established.

3. How to inject your ShroomTek

After the bag arrives, it is good practice to wait about a week before inoculating so you can confirm the bag looks intact after shipping. If a bag arrives damaged, torn, or clearly compromised, email us at 4kbowen@gmail.com with your order number and clear photos before you inject — we will help coordinate next steps with the supplier under their return policy. (Supplier items ship from the vendor; returns follow that vendor’s terms.)

  1. Prepare your syringe per the culture maker’s directions. If it was refrigerated, let it warm toward room temperature for a few hours first.
  2. The needle is sterile for first use. For any later use, wipe with alcohol or flame-sterilize the tip until it glows, then cool before injecting. Do not use an open flame inside a still air box.
  3. Wipe the injection port again with 70% alcohol.
  4. If the syringe contents look settled, gently shake a few seconds to disperse spores or mycelium.
  5. Remove the needle cap and push the sterile needle through the self-healing injection port.
  6. Inject 2.5–5 cc per bag (you can go higher, up to about 15 cc, if you want a heavier inoculation). Higher rates often colonize faster and can outcompete contaminants better.
  7. Withdraw the needle. The port seals itself. Wipe the port once more if you like.

Note: Injection port color can vary by batch.

4. Colonization (storage while mycelium runs)

  1. Set the bag somewhere undisturbed, out of direct sun. Aim for roughly 55–75°F. Cooler slows growth; hotter risks stalling or contamination. The warmer end of that range usually colonizes faster.
  2. Do not open the bag during colonization. Leave the filter patch clear so it can breathe.
  3. After several weeks (often in the 4–8 week window, species-dependent), you should see white mycelium spreading from the injection area.
  4. When mycelium has advanced a few inches (about 3–4"), without opening the bag, gently break up the colonized portion and mix it through the uncolonized substrate. That “break and mix” step speeds the rest of colonization.
  5. The bag is ready to fruit when the substrate looks fully colonized — typically solid white mycelium through the block. Plan on additional weeks after the mix step; total time varies with species and culture vigor.

Patience beats peeking. No growth for a stretch is often “still germinating or colonizing,” especially with spores.

5. Fruiting conditions (what the bag needs)

Fully colonized mycelium fruits when it gets the right mix of fresh air, humidity, light, and temperature:

  • Light: Indirect window light or a simple lamp works. Mushrooms do not need plant-style full sun. If you use a light, about 12 hours on / 12 off is a solid default.
  • Temperature: Many gourmet dung-loving species fruit around room temperature in roughly the 60–80°F band. Match species to the climate you can hold steady.
  • Fresh air: Lower CO2 at the surface helps trigger pins. That is why you cut the bag open for fruiting instead of leaving it sealed forever.
  • Humidity: Fruit bodies are mostly water. Keep the air inside the bag humid once you open it. Short dry spells often abort pins.

6. Fruiting your ShroomTek (step-by-step in the bag)

When the block is fully white and ready, fruit in the bag:

  1. Sanitize again. Clean the workspace, gloves, scissors/knife, and the outside of the bag with 70% alcohol.
  2. Rubber band. Place a rubber band around the colonized block about 1 inch below the top surface of the substrate. Work air pockets up above the band so the plastic sits tight against the lower block. The band helps starve side pins of oxygen so mushrooms push from the top.
  3. First slit. Cut a slit 1–2 inches above the substrate, about as wide as the filter patch. That starts fresh air exchange while the bag still holds humidity. (Optional: place the bag inside a monotub or grow tent if you already use one.)
  4. Wait for pins. Leave it alone until tiny primordia (pins) form on the surface — often about a week, sometimes longer.
  5. Widen for more air. Once pins are in, extend the cut across the front for more fresh air. Fast species (for example many oysters) may need the full front opening sooner so stems do not stretch from high CO2.
  6. Cut a hood. Extend the cut around the sides but leave the back intact so the upper plastic becomes a hood. Mist up into the hood with boiled/distilled water to raise humidity. Droplets can run down the plastic; try not to blast pins or the substrate surface with a hard spray.

Harvest when mushrooms are ready (next section), then you can chase more flushes from the same block.

7. Harvest and later flushes

Mushrooms can jump from “almost” to “past peak” in a day. Watch them closely.

  • When to pick: Harvest before caps flatten or turn concave. If the species has a veil, pick as the veil starts to break.
  • How to pick: Grip the cluster at the base and twist gently, or cut with clean scissors/knife. Clear leftover stubs down to the myceliated surface so bits do not rot into the next flush.

For another flush:

  1. Rehydrate by misting the sides and up into the hood several times over a few hours so moisture soaks in instead of pooling.
  2. Fold the hood down around the block again to trap humidity (and CO2) while the block recovers.
  3. When pins return, open the hood for fresh air again and repeat the fruiting steps until the block is spent.

Because the hood is already cut, you adjust how open it sits rather than cutting new slits each flush.

Optional: fruiting chambers

ShroomTek is built as a self-contained grow. If you want tighter control of humidity and air, you can finish colonized bags in a monotub or martha-style tent. Keep surfaces clean, maintain high humidity without drowning the block, and increase fresh air if stems look fuzzy or stretched. FAQ

Which mushrooms work best in ShroomTek?

Manure-loving (dung-loving) species are the intended match for this manure-based blend. Wood-loving species sometimes work, but expect more reliable results with dung-loving cultures.

How much do I inject?

We recommend 2.5–5 cc of spore or liquid culture per bag. Higher inoculation rates can speed colonization.

Why isn’t my bag showing growth?

Wait longer first — spores and slow cultures can take weeks. Confirm temperature is in the 55–75°F colonization range and that you did not shake a spore-only inoculation immediately after injecting. If the bag looked compromised on arrival, contact 4kbowen@gmail.com with photos and your order number before assuming the culture failed.

Fuzzy stems?

Usually too much CO2 or excess moisture. Open the hood more for fresh air and mist a little less often.

Brown or cracked caps?

Often low humidity or a late harvest. Mist up into the hood more often and pick earlier.

Pale fruit or weird elongated stems?

Pale fruit can mean high heat and/or very low light — cool the spot and add gentle ambient light. Long stems usually mean high CO2 — give the bag more fresh air.

Pins formed, then stopped?

Often a humidity dip. Raise humidity with more hood misting. If the block stalls hard after full colonization, some growers briefly soak the still-bagged block (often around 20 minutes, then drain) or try a cool overnight rest near refrigerator temps for certain species — watch the block so it does not break apart.

Do ShroomTek bags ship free?

No. Shipping for mushroom products is calculated at checkout. Our free-shipping threshold applies to qualifying egg orders over $40, not store-wide mushroom supplies.

Is this the same as a Spray & Grow kit?

No. Spray & Grow kits arrive already colonized and are the simplest “mist and harvest” path. ShroomTek is for when you have a culture and want an inject-and-wait sterile all-in-one bag. Compare both on our beginner kits collection and this method page.
