Frequently asked questions

How long do Bobwhite quail eggs take to hatch?

Northern Bobwhite eggs take about 23 days to hatch when incubated at about 99.5°F (37.5°C) in a forced-air incubator.

What humidity should we use?

Most keepers run about 45 to 55% humidity for the first 20 days, then raise it to about 65 to 70% for lockdown, the last 3 days before hatch.

When do we stop turning the eggs?

Stop turning on about day 20. Lay the eggs flat, raise the humidity, and keep the incubator closed until the chicks hatch and dry.

What should we do when shipped eggs arrive?

Open the box, check the eggs, and let them rest pointed end down at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours before setting them. Shipped eggs often hatch at a lower rate than fresh farm eggs because of handling in transit, so set all the eggs you receive.

How do you ship hatching eggs?

We pack eggs carefully and ship to all US states and Puerto Rico. Egg orders over $40 ship free. Gear and supplies from other vendors ship from that vendor, and shipping is set by the vendor. An optional Hatch Rate Assurance add-on is also available.

How many eggs come in an order?

Our Bobwhite listings come in 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 eggs. We also offer a 36-egg starter kit with an eBook.

Do we need a permit to keep Bobwhite quail?

Maybe. Northern Bobwhite are a native game bird, and rules for keeping, raising or releasing them differ from state to state. Some states require a permit or license. Please check with your state wildlife agency before you order.

Are your quail NPIP certified?

Yes. We raise our quail ourselves in Mayo, FL, and our flock is NPIP certified.

How warm should the brooder be?

Start chicks at about 95°F the first week, then lower it about 5°F each week until they are fully feathered. Bobwhites feather out more slowly than Coturnix, often around 6 weeks. Use a shallow waterer or add marbles or pebbles so chicks cannot drown.

How is raising Bobwhite different from Coturnix?

Bobwhites grow more slowly, are more flighty, and lay mostly in spring and summer. Hens often start laying at around 16 weeks or later. A covered pen with room to move helps keep them calm.
