How to Plant an Oyster 'Plant & Grow' Mushroom Starter Block

Blue Oyster Plant & Grow Mushroom Starter Block

North Spore's "Plant & Grow" starter blocks are one of the easiest ways to start growing mushrooms. Each block is already full of living mushroom roots (mycelium). You plant it outside and the mushrooms come up right from the soil. Blue Oyster is rated beginner level and is known for big flushes with little care.

1. Plant it soon

Take the block out of the shipping box as soon as it arrives. It is alive and needs air. Plant it within a few days if you can.

2. Pick a shady, damp spot

Mushrooms do not need sun. Pick a spot in shade or part shade that stays moist, like under trees, beside a building, or next to garden plants.

3. Plant the block

Take the block out of its bag and dig a hole about the size of the block. Set it in so the top is about level with the ground, then cover it lightly with soil, leaves or wood chips.

4. Keep it moist

Water the spot when the ground dries out. Steady moisture is the most important thing. Mushrooms usually come up when the weather is cool and wet.

5. Harvest

Pick the cluster when the caps are open but before the edges curl up. Cut or twist at the base. If conditions stay right, you may get a second or even third round.

Which oyster to pick

We also carry Chestnut, Nameko, Golden Enoki and Reishi starter blocks. Pink Oyster likes warm weather, which makes it a good fit for Florida and the South.
